Big Sky PBR: A Montana Tradition of Grit, Glory, and Community

What is Big Sky PBR?
Each summer, under the towering peaks of Lone Mountain, Big Sky PBR brings world-class bull riding to the heart of Montana. More than just a rodeo, this is a full-throttle celebration of sport, community, and the wild spirit of the West.

The Origins of PBR

The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) league began in 1992, founded by a group of rodeo cowboys who believed bull riding deserved its own stage. Their mission? To spotlight the raw, adrenaline-fueled intensity of one of the toughest sports on Earth. What started as a niche attraction has grown into a global phenomenon, featuring elite athletes going head-to-head with 1,800-pound bulls in a spectacle of strength, courage, and split-second skill.

How Big Sky PBR Began

What began as a bold vision in an open field has become one of Montana’s premier summer events. Held at the Big Sky Events Arena in the Town Center, Big Sky PBR is now a cornerstone of the community’s cultural calendar. Every July, it draws thousands of spectators, thrill-seekers, and families eager to experience the perfect blend of Western tradition and outdoor adventure.

Why Big Sky PBR Stands Out

This isn’t just any stop on the PBR tour. The Big Sky PBR has been named Event of the Year eleven years in a row, earning accolades from both fans and riders. It’s the only PBR stop with a backdrop like this—Montana’s jagged peaks, fiery sunsets, and wide-open skies.

Cowboy Wyatt Rogers put it best:

“This is the best event of the year. It’s one of a kind and there’s no atmosphere like this. I mean, just look at the beautiful country behind us.”

Community Comes First

Beyond the edge-of-your-seat action in the arena, Big Sky PBR gives back in a big way. Through auctions, raffles, and community support, the event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local nonprofits—a powerful reminder that this celebration is about more than just bulls and buckles.

Behind the Scenes: The Team That Makes It Happen

Behind the chutes, former bull rider and longtime stock contractor Brad Vogele plays a critical role. As the lead bull loader, Vogele ensures that bulls move on and off the dirt with precision, keeping the show flowing smoothly and safely.

“We’ve been to many PBRs, but we love this community,” Vogele said. “We get this awesome opportunity to help, so our purpose now is to help the McCoys load bulls.”

It’s the unseen dedication of people like Vogele that gives Big Sky PBR its legendary reputation.

Music, Montana, and Memories

When the dust settles, the celebration continues. After night one, spectators made their way to Len Hill Park to enjoy a concert by The Brothers Comatose, part of the Music in the Mountains series, hosted by the Arts Council of Big Sky.

Australian rider Brady Fielder currently leads the standings with an 87-point ride—but the action isn’t over. There are still two more nights of competition, community spirit, and Montana magic ahead.
